Brighton Teen Jailed for Seven Years Over Knife Attack that Injured Three

Lewes Crown Court hears how a 17-year-old pursued and injured three young people in an unprovoked Brighton knife attack

A 17-year-old boy from Brighton has been sentenced to seven years of detention after injuring three people in a knife attack on Gardner Street in January. He appeared before Lewes Crown Court on November 6, where he received a four-year custodial sentence followed by three years on licence. Due to his age, his identity remains protected.

The incident took place on January 12 around 11 pm, when the teenager reportedly pursued a group of three friends. A 20-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman suffered serious knife wounds, and an 18-year-old woman was physically assaulted.

Two 17-year-old boys were initially arrested an hour after the attack and subsequently released on bail under strict conditions while further enquiries were made. No further action was taken against one of the boys. However, in June, the defendant was charged with multiple offenses, including grievous bodily harm with intent, actual bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, and assaulting a police officer.

DC James Botting, the investigating officer, condemned the “unprovoked and mindless act,” emphasizing that the boy had pursued the group with the intent to cause serious harm. The attack has raised concerns about knife crime in the Brighton area, with Sussex Police urging young people to consider the devastating consequences of carrying and using weapons.

This sentencing marks a significant step in Sussex Police’s ongoing efforts to address knife-related violence and protect public safety in Brighton and surrounding areas.
