A tragic altercation in the heart of Brighton has culminated in a life sentence for Armin Mehdikhani-Sarvejahani, the 16-year-old found guilty of murdering 17-year-old Mustafa Momand last October. The sentence was handed down yesterday at Lewes Crown Court, with the presiding judge lifting the anonymity usually granted to minors in such cases.

Mustafa Momand lost his life following a single stab wound during an altercation on Queens Road, Brighton. Despite the efforts of public first responders and emergency services, he was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to hospital. The incident, which occurred on October 5, 2023, saw Mehdikhani-Sarvejahani fleeing the scene with a large knife, only to be apprehended later that evening in a dramatic police operation in Bevendean.

Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell of Sussex and Surrey Police’s Major Crime Team expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and highlighted the broader impact of the murder on the Brighton community. “Mustafa’s death was a senseless tragedy,” Campbell stated, reflecting on the public and community response to the crime.

The court ruled that Mehdikhani-Sarvejahani must serve at least 17 years before eligibility for release, facing additional charges of making threats with a bladed article in unrelated incidents. His conviction marks a significant moment in Sussex Police’s ongoing fight against knife crime, a campaign underscored by Chief Inspector Jim Loader’s remarks on the risks and consequences of carrying knives.
