A driver who intentionally struck a woman known to him with his car in Brighton has pleaded guilty in court to multiple charges.
Fharharde Uddin, 27, of no fixed address, drove into the pedestrian on Whitehawk Crescent, Brighton, on August 19, 2023. The incident, which left the victim with life-threatening injuries, was investigated by Sussex Police’s Major Crime Team.
Witnesses reported seeing Uddin attempting to bundle the injured woman into the rear passenger seat of his vehicle after the collision. She later required surgery for her injuries.
At a hearing at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, December 6, Uddin admitted to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. He had initially been scheduled to stand trial but changed his plea following the presentation of evidence by the prosecution.
Detective Inspector Duncan Elliott, who led the investigation, described the case as domestic abuse-related and urged anyone affected by such abuse to seek help. He said, “This was an incident related to domestic abuse, and we encourage anyone who is impacted by domestic abuse to report it to us. You are not alone; help is available. We were determined to ensure a successful prosecution in this case, and the defendant now awaits sentencing.”
Uddin is scheduled to be sentenced on February 14, 2024.
