Man Convicted of Rape on Brighton Beach Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

Przemyslaw Pogorzzelec, a 43-year-old man formerly of Hove and currently with no fixed address, has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault by penetration after forcing himself upon a woman on Brighton beach. The victim, whose identity is protected by law, received support from dedicated officers throughout the investigation.

The incident occurred in the early hours of July 31 last year, and multiple witnesses observed the assault taking place. Upon being approached by members of the Beach Patrol and security personnel, the victim immediately disclosed that she had not consented to the act. Responding promptly, the authorities detained and arrested Pogorzzelec.

During the trial, the defendant claimed that he had engaged in consensual sex with the young woman after striking up a conversation with her. However, when questioned by law enforcement, he displayed a lack of recollection regarding her name, age, or any other relevant details. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s incapacitation, asserting that she was incapable of giving consent.

Following the trial held at Lewes Crown Court, the jury found Pogorzzelec guilty of rape and sexual assault by penetration. The court imposed a 12-year prison sentence, accompanied by an additional three-year extended license period.

Further details provided during the sentencing revealed that Pogorzzelec not only assaulted the victim but also captured intimate photographs of her using his mobile phone. His actions were interrupted by the timely intervention of Beach Patrol and security personnel from nearby establishments.

It came to light during the proceedings that Pogorzzelec had a previous conviction in 2013 for exposure, in violation of the Sexual Offences Act.

Detective Constable Ciara Richardson commended the victim for her bravery in testifying against her assailant. She also highlighted the swift progress made in the investigation, which involved gathering witness statements and footage that substantiated Pogorzzelec’s predatory actions towards the young woman when she was alone on the beach.

“We are pleased that a dangerous offender is now in prison for these offences,” stated Detective Constable Richardson after the court hearing.`
