A Jewish memorial in Palmeira Square, Hove, was damaged on October 3, 2024, during the Jewish New Year. The memorial, dedicated to victims of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks in Israel, was destroyed in an incident that sparked outrage within the local community. A video of the vandalism circulated widely online, showing a man damaging the memorial before a bystander intervened to prevent further destruction.
Following the release of the footage, Sussex Police arrested a 58-year-old man from Hove on Monday, October 7, on suspicion of racially/religiously aggravated criminal damage. The suspect remains in custody while the investigation continues.
Detective Superintendent Ben Newman addressed the community’s concerns, stating:
“We understand that this incident has caused great upset within many communities, and we would like to reassure the public that our investigation team is working hard to gather all the facts and bring this matter to a positive conclusion.”
