On Friday, November 29, 2024, Brighton hosted its annual Reclaim the Night march, a vibrant and determined demonstration against gender-based violence. The march began at 6 PM from Brighton Station, bringing together individuals across the city to demand safer streets and equal rights for all.
Participants carried banners, chanted slogans, and stood in solidarity to highlight the ongoing need for action against harassment, abuse, and discrimination. This event, part of the broader 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, emphasised reclaiming public spaces for everyone, free from fear and intimidation.
The march reflects a longstanding tradition, tracing its roots to the first Reclaim the Night protests in 1977, inspired by feminist movements across Europe. Brighton’s event included speeches from local organizations advocating for survivors of violence.
This year’s turnout and energy reaffirmed the community’s commitment to addressing these critical issues, fostering unity, and pushing for systemic change.
