Eastbourne Lifeboat Crew Rescues Vessel from Shipping Lanes on Christmas Day

While many were enjoying Christmas festivities, Eastbourne’s volunteer RNLI crew answered the call to assist an angling boat in distress, showcasing their unwavering dedication to saving lives at sea.

At 12:40 pm on Christmas Day, the crew’s pagers sounded as Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the All-Weather Lifeboat Esme Anderson. The task: to assist a vessel experiencing mechanical failure 16 miles south of Sovereign Harbour, stranded in the middle of busy shipping lanes.

Swift Response Amid Holiday Plans
Despite leaving behind their family celebrations, the volunteers quickly made their way to the station, launching through the locks at 1 pm. Once on scene, the crew assessed the situation, ensuring the sole occupant of the stranded vessel was safe before making the decision to tow the boat out of the hazardous shipping lanes.

A Safe Return
The lifeboat crew successfully towed the angling vessel back to Sovereign Harbour, arriving just after 4 pm. Upon docking, the volunteers ensured the boat was secure, allowing repairs to commence, and prepared their lifeboat for any further emergencies.

A Dedication to Duty
The crew was stood down and returned home to rejoin their families, many just in time to enjoy their Christmas dinners—a testament to their selfless dedication.

Eastbourne RNLI’s incredible efforts on Christmas Day highlight the vital role these volunteers play, putting the safety of others above their own plans.
