EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Newhaven Coastguard and Lifeboat rescue person cut off by the tide in Peacehaven

The coastguard control room received a report of a person who was cut off by the tide in Peacehaven this morning, around 200 meters east of Friars Bay Steps. Coastguard teams were immediately mobilised to the scene to provide assistance.

Upon arrival, the coastguard teams located the man from the clifftop, and the Newhaven lifeboat was launched at 11:30am and made its way to the area. The Y Boat was launched with two crew members on board to rescue the trapped lone male walker. The two RNLI crew on the Y Boat jumped out to check on the male, and holding the boat while waves crashed against it and the tide still coming in, they assisted the male on board.

It was then decided to take the man back to West Beach in Newhaven, where it is believed he walked from.

This incident highlights the importance of being aware of tide times when exploring the coast, and in a coastal emergency, always call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

A Spokesperson for the RNLI said “Newhaven RNLI was tasked at 11.30 am this morning to assist a person cut off by the tide approximately 200 meters east of the bastion steps at Peacehaven. RNLI volunteers launched their all-weather lifeboat and deployed the Y boat to reach the casualty. The casualty was safely recovered and returned to the west beach in Newhaven.

Crews were stood down at 12.50 pm and returned to the lifeboat station.”
