A 56-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of blackmail in connection with county lines drug dealing. James Sunderland, formerly of Merrimede Close, St Leonards, was convicted at Brighton Crown Court on 10 January following a detailed investigation by Sussex Police.
The court heard that Sunderland played a key role in the “Pattern Gang” county drug line, a network targeted by police throughout 2023. The investigation uncovered numerous instances of coercion, threats, and violence aimed at individuals forced to work for the gang.
Victim and Family Targeted
One victim came forward to report that a member of her family had been coerced into supplying drugs to settle a debt owed to the gang. Sunderland, known as “Jay Jay”, frequently loitered outside the family’s home and demanded payments.
The victim, fearing for her family’s safety, borrowed large sums of money to repay the alleged debt. Her fear escalated to the point where she installed CCTV cameras at her home and kept fire extinguishers nearby, concerned that Sunderland or his associates might target her property.
The victim also recounted several instances of direct threats and intimidation. On one occasion, Sunderland threatened to throw acid in her face and warned she would never see her family member again if she involved the police. He also demanded cash in person and once forced the family member into the boot of his car.
Frequent Visits and Threats
Between May and October 2023, Sunderland reportedly visited the victim’s home up to 40 times, waiting outside and repeatedly phoning the family member. During this time, the family member also suffered physical assault, with Sunderland allegedly present during one such incident.
Police Statement
After the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Jason Tuck emphasised the destructive impact of county lines drug dealing on communities. “Sunderland menaced the victim and her family member, threatening severe violence and putting them in extreme fear. He attended her home multiple times to enforce the debt and collect payment. This case highlights the harm caused by county lines drug dealing, and we remain committed to investigating and bringing offenders like Sunderland to justice.”
The successful conviction follows months of targeted police action against the “Pattern Gang”, with multiple warrants executed across East Sussex. Authorities continue to appeal for information to combat county lines operations and support those affected.
