Mini Cooper crash: Driver jailed for leaving passenger trapped and fleeing

A dangerous driver who fled the scene of a collision, leaving a passenger trapped in the vehicle, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. Reece Page, a 27-year-old provisional license holder, lost control of a Mini Cooper and crashed into a brick wall on Polegate Road, Hailsham. The incident, which occurred on February 26, 2022, left a 22-year-old man from Burgess Hill in the rear passenger seat with life-changing injuries.

After the collision, Page hastily abandoned the scene, leaving the injured passenger stranded. Emergency services swiftly arrived, and firefighters were required to extract the trapped man safely before rushing him to the hospital for treatment.

During the court proceedings at Lewes Crown Court, Page pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The court heard that Page, who was unemployed and resided on Station Road, Hailsham, had been at a JD Wetherspoon pub in Hailsham prior to the incident. Despite being warned not to drive by a friend and lacking permission to operate the vehicle, Page decided to take the keys and drive away.

The severity of the consequences resulting from Page’s actions was emphasized during the court hearing. In addition to his prison sentence, Page was also disqualified from driving for five years and ten months. The presiding judge expressed dismay at Page’s reckless and selfish behavior, highlighting the complete disregard he showed for the passenger’s well-being.

PC Lloyd Archer from the Roads Policing Unit, speaking after the case, condemned Page’s actions and emphasized the serious risks he posed to himself, his passenger, and other road users. PC Archer stated, “Page’s actions were reckless and selfish. He showed no regard for his passenger who has been left with life-changing injuries.” PC Archer further added, “Page will have to think about his behavior from his prison cell. We are pleased that a dangerous driver has been taken off our roads.”
