Sussex-based photographer Jacy Wilkes has been nominated for a second consecutive British Photography Award, this time for her powerful self-portrait, Walls Defrosting. The image, part of her ongoing research into the visual representation of emotional trauma, has earned her a place in the highly competitive ‘Self Portrait’ category of the renowned awards.
The British Photography Awards celebrate the best in contemporary photography, providing a platform for both emerging and established photographers to showcase their work. Wilkes, who has previously been recognised for her evocative family and real estate photography, has now shifted her focus to more personal themes as part of her master’s research at Falmouth University.
Reflecting on Walls Defrosting, Wilkes shared, “For me, this image describes that frozen, helpless feeling which often comes with traumatic situations—when anxiety or fear immobilises you, preventing you from falling apart.”
The nomination has come at a significant time for Wilkes, who admitted that she had begun to doubt her work. “To be shortlisted again amongst such high-calibre entries is an immense honour,” she said. “This recognition reaffirms the importance of my work and the need for more awareness about emotional trauma, especially in the context of toxic relationships.”
A 2024 graduate of Falmouth University’s online Photography MA, Wilkes credits the program with helping her discover her artistic voice. “The course was life-changing,” she said. “It gave me the confidence and support to tell my story through my art, and I’ve made lasting connections through the online community.”
The winners of the British Photography Awards will be announced at a gala in London this November. In addition to her shortlist nomination, Wilkes is also in the running for the People’s Choice Award. Public voting is open until October 9, 2024.
