Commuters in Newhaven faced severe delays this morning as contractors installing the town’s Christmas lights blocked a lane on the one-way system at the C7 junction during rush hour. The unexpected disruption led to traffic tailbacks stretching over three miles, leaving drivers frustrated and tempers flaring.
Council Apologises for Contractor’s Actions
Newhaven Town Council swiftly issued an apology, distancing itself from the decision to carry out the installation during peak traffic times. Town Clerk Ken Dry expressed regret and assured residents the matter had been addressed with the contractors.
“The Town Council is very much aware of the inconvenience and consternation caused by the ill-advised actions of our Christmas Lights contractor this morning. Please accept our apologies for this,” said Mr. Dry.
He clarified that the contractors are typically required to carry out such work late at night or in the early morning to minimize disruption, but this protocol was ignored without the Council’s knowledge.
“Their decision and actions were inappropriate, and the Council sincerely apologizes for what has happened. This matter has been taken up with them in the strongest possible terms to ensure no repetition.”
