A significant cliff fall at Birling Gap on Tuesday evening has prompted renewed warnings for visitors to steer clear of the unstable Sussex coastline. Local resident Grazyna Hammond captured the shocking moment the cliff gave way at around 5:45 p.m., sending a mass of chalk and debris plummeting to the beach below.
The collapse is the latest in a series of cliff falls that have plagued the Sussex coast in recent months. Authorities, including Sussex News, Our Coast Coast Page on Facebook, the council, and the coastguard, have repeatedly cautioned the public to avoid the edges and bases of cliffs, as they can collapse with little to no warning.
HM Coastguard is now urging those visiting the coast to stay on designated paths. A spokesperson explained, “The cliffs along the UK coastline are continually eroding, with pieces falling from them that can be just a few small rocks or as large as a car. It’s impossible to predict when the next piece might fall or how big it will be.”
In addition, those planning to be near the cliffs are advised to inform someone of their whereabouts and expected return time. Visitors are also being reminded to bring a fully-charged phone in case of emergency, and, crucially, to avoid attempting to rescue themselves or a pet if they get into difficulty.
Despite a number of clear signs, many visitors continue to venture dangerously close to the edge, drawn by the spectacular views. However, with the coast eroding rapidly, experts are warning that the cliffs are increasingly prone to sudden and unpredictable collapses.
“These cliffs might look sturdy, but they’re incredibly fragile,” the coastguard spokesperson added. “We urge everyone to enjoy the coastline safely, but please stay back from the edge and the base – the next fall could happen at any moment.”
While no injuries were reported in Tuesday’s collapse, the coastguard is urging the public to take the warnings seriously, as the risk of further incidents remains high.
