Volunteer attacked with bottle in unprovoked attack at bonfire event

A volunteer marshal was assaulted with a bottle while working at a bonfire society celebration in Lewes, police said.

The 55-year-old man was helping out at the Nevill Junior Bonfire Society event, off Nevill Road, on Saturday 21 October when he was attacked by a male suspect between 9.44pm and 10.10pm.

The suspect, who was part of a group, is described as being in his late teens, about 6’1” tall and having short light-coloured hair. He fled the scene towards Nevill Crescent after the victim was hit in the head with a bottle.

The victim suffered a cut to his head and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Detective Police Constable Paul Rolfe, from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said: “This was a completely unprovoked and violent attack on a member of our community simply trying to keep local residents safe when attending a yearly celebration.”
