While some members of Hastings RNLI lifeboat crew were participating in the town’s annual bonfire parade, others were responding to an emergency call after both lifeboats were launched into action on Saturday evening.
At 18:30, just as the parade was gathering, the Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) was paged by Solent Coastguard following reports of a windsurfer in difficulty off the coast of St Leonard’s. The volunteer crew swiftly arrived on scene, using flares to illuminate the area for their search. However, after a thorough investigation, no windsurfer was found.
As darkness set in and the sea conditions worsened, the ILB returned to station. The All Weather Lifeboat (ALB) was then tasked with the search, pulling additional crew members away from the bonfire parade. The ALB, using onboard searchlights, conducted a comprehensive search of the defined area, but once again, no sign of the windsurfer was discovered.
After the Coastguard confirmed the search was complete, both lifeboats were stood down and returned to the station.
Hastings RNLI praised the commitment of their volunteer crew, who balanced their community involvement with their lifesaving duties.
Photos of the operation, provided with permission by crew members Claire and Chloe, highlighted the dedication of all involved.
Hastings RNLI remains ready to respond, day or night, ensuring the safety of those in need at sea.
