A motorist caught driving at a shocking 130mph on the M23 near Crawley has been banned from driving. Stuart Chandler, 53, of Wrights Lane, Kensington, was spotted speeding in a green McLaren 600LT by an unmarked police vehicle on April 13.
The reckless driver was only stopped when traffic slowed his vehicle, allowing PC Jordan Mitchell to catch up after exceeding 130mph himself during the pursuit.
Court Outcome
Chandler appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on November 5, where he admitted to exceeding the 70mph speed limit. Already holding nine penalty points on his licence, he was disqualified from driving for six months. He was also fined £2,500, ordered to pay a £1,000 victim surcharge, and £110 in court costs.
High-Speed Pursuit
The green McLaren 600LT, valued at around £200,000, was seized under the Road Traffic Act. Chandler told officers he hadn’t realised the speed he was travelling.
PC Mitchell highlighted the severity of the incident, saying:
- “Chandler’s driving was reckless, and we know from experience the devastating consequences that speeding can have. He is lucky not to have caused himself or another road user serious harm and has now lost his licence as a result.”
The Dangers of Speeding
Speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road collisions in the UK. Police urge drivers to obey speed limits and recognise the potentially devastating impact of excessive speed on their own safety and that of others.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the consequences of dangerous driving.
