A&E Pressure Mounts in West Sussex Hospitals

The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, managing seven hospitals across five different sites, issued an urgent notice on Tuesday afternoon regarding the extreme busyness at the A&E departments of Worthing and St Richard’s hospitals. The Trust emphasizes the remarkable efforts of its staff who are tirelessly working to provide care for patients amid this challenging situation.

The Trust appeals to the public for kindness and understanding when visiting any of their hospitals. They stress that A&E departments should only be visited for life-threatening emergencies, especially given the current high volume of patients, particularly in West Sussex.

In an effort to manage the situation more effectively, the Trust advises individuals in need of urgent care, which is not life-threatening, to consider visiting an Urgent Treatment Centre or Minor Injury Unit. These facilities are equipped to handle a variety of medical issues such as sprains, minor head injuries, scalds, stomach problems, and more. This approach aims to alleviate the pressure on the A&E departments, ensuring that those with the most critical needs receive timely and efficient care.

The University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust remains committed to providing the highest level of healthcare and urges the community to support their efforts during this busy period.
