In a late-night development, significant progress has been made in restoring the IT systems at the Royal Sussex County and Princess Royal hospitals. Following the declaration of a Critical Incident earlier this evening due to major disruptions in IT and phone systems, tireless efforts by staff and external support have led to an improved situation.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service, along with other NHS Trusts and partners, have been instrumental in providing support during this crisis. Their contributions have been crucial in stabilizing the systems, and their efforts are deeply appreciated.

However, it’s important to note that this is still an ongoing situation. The public is urged to avoid using Emergency Departments for non-critical issues. Alternatives like visiting 111.nhs.uk or calling 111 are recommended for non-emergency advice or help.

The Critical Incident, declared at 10 PM, has significantly impacted both hospitals, leading to the diversion of ambulances and re-routing of patients to alternative facilities. The public is strongly advised to seek lifesaving emergency care only at Emergency Departments. For urgent health support, NHS 111 online or phone services should be used.

In a specific note to those needing maternity services, direct contact numbers for the maternity units at Royal Sussex County in Brighton (07917 751742) and Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath (07436 040094) have been provided. This is due to the ongoing inability to contact the hospitals by regular phone lines.

St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester and Worthing Hospital are also experiencing disruptions, though to a lesser extent, and are under pressure as they support the affected hospitals.

The declaration of a critical incident is a strategic move allowing staff to prioritize patient needs and seek further support. The primary goal remains to bring IT systems back to full functionality. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
