Brighton & Hove Buses Takes Home Inclusivity Award at 2024 Transport Awards

The only Level 3 Inclusive Transport Leader, Brighton & Hove Buses takes home national award for its accessibility efforts

Brighton & Hove Buses have been awarded the prestigious title of National Winner for Best Practice in Diversity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility at the National Transport Awards 2024. The annual event, now in its 21st year, was held in Westminster and celebrates excellence within the transport industry, recognizing the efforts of organizations that help keep the country moving and support economic growth.

The award reflects Brighton & Hove Buses’ pioneering approach to accessibility, driven by a community-focused culture change. A dedicated community team works closely with individuals who have lived experiences to co-create policies that ensure a more inclusive and accessible experience for all passengers.

Key initiatives highlighted in their award win include the launch of a co-created driver training video in partnership with the Thomas Pocklington Trust, the introduction of a fleet of 44 buses with dementia-friendly flooring, and the transformation of their Travel Centre into an inclusive community hub. Brighton & Hove Buses is the only bus company in the UK to be accredited as a Level 3 Inclusive Transport Leader by the Department for Transport, the highest accolade available. The company has also earned recognition as a Disability Confident employer from the Department for Work and Pensions and was the first to be accredited as an age- and dementia-friendly business by Brighton & Hove City Council.

Ed Wills, Managing Director of Brighton & Hove Buses, expressed his pride in the company’s commitment to accessibility, stating, “Our community and accessibility team collaborate very closely with people in the community who have lived experiences. This helps us to continually improve with the aim of making our buses accessible to everyone.”

In addition to their win in accessibility, Brighton & Hove Buses were also highly commended in the ‘Best Bus Service’ category for their recently extended Route 28, which now reaches Eastbourne.

The recognition highlights Brighton & Hove Buses’ dedication to creating an inclusive transport system and continuing their commitment to innovation in accessibility and community engagement.
