A rail workers’ strike orchestrated by the ASELF union wreaked havoc on Gatwick Airport’s transportation infrastructure, resulting in severe traffic congestion that caused delays of up to 45 minutes for motorists attempting to exit the M23 from the North and up to 20 minutes from the South. With no train services operating to or from Gatwick Airport, road travel became the sole means of reaching the airport, triggering extensive queues that persisted throughout the day.
From early morning until late evening, traffic steadily built up, causing frustration and travel disruptions for countless passengers. Sussex Travel Watch reported delays persisting for the majority of the day,
In a scene captured by highway traffic cameras, desperate individuals striving to reach the airport were seen on a perilous journey down the M23 toward Gatwick Airport. This dangerous act prompted a swift response from highways control, who deployed additional resources to address the situation promptly.
One person took to Social Media and Said “I’ve been watching the feed for about 5 minutes and so far 3 people have walked along the Motorway to the airport – make that 6 people now…”
It is important to note that walking on a motorway is a criminal offense, and those seen on the traffic cameras doing so risk incurring significant penalties. The maximum fine for such an offense is up to £2,500, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the potential dangers faced by those resorting to extreme measures.
Affected passengers were strongly advised in advance to stay updated on travel advisories, allow ample time for their journeys, and consider alternative routes if possible.
