UPDATE:- Dog missing after being washed out to sea in Peacehaven has now been located

At lunchtime, on Wednesday (12th January 2023) Newhaven Coastguard responded to reports of a dog that had got washed out to sea on the undercliff at Peacehaven adjacent to the Bastion Steps.

Despite the efforts of everybody there to rescue him, he was sadly lost.

The dog named Denzil was a 3yr old, liver and white coloured Sprocker Spaniel.

Update Friday 13/01/2023
Better weather today and low tide this morning has allowed Denzils owners to search for him using a drone for assistance. This has resulted in the successful locating and recovery of their boy and means he can now rest in peace with them.

Some tips from the Coastguard on how to stay safe with your dog on the coast.

  • Stay away from cliff edges – they can be crumbly or slippery when wet
  • Always keep your dog on a lead near cliffs
  • Do not attempt to rescue a dog which is being swept out to sea
  • If in danger, call 999 and ask for the coastguard
