Detectives have taken a crucial step forward in their investigation to identify a man who tragically lost his life on board an aircraft bound for the United Kingdom. The police were alerted after the discovery of the man’s body in the undercarriage of an airplane that had landed at Gatwick Airport around 4 am on December 7 of last year.
The flight originated from Banjul in The Gambia and had taken off shortly before 10 pm local time. As the investigation progresses, officers are diligently working alongside the High Commissioner for Gambia, Interpol, and HM Coroner to formally establish the man’s identity.
To aid their efforts, detectives have released an e-fit image of the young man believed to be in his 20s or 30s. This image has been shared with authorities in The Gambia as they seek assistance in identifying the individual. It is hoped that somewhere, the man has relatives or loved ones who are unaware of his tragic fate.
Detective Inspector Darren Lillywhite expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This was a tragic case, and we are working to establish the identity of the man found deceased. We have now produced an e-fit image of the young man, believed to be aged in his 20s or 30s, which we have shared with authorities in The Gambia.”
He continued, “Somewhere, this man will have relatives or loved ones who do not know what has happened to him. We hope to be able to identify him for the purposes of an inquest to be held by HM Coroner, which may at least provide some answers and closure for those who knew him.”
Detective Inspector Lillywhite appealed to the public for assistance, particularly from individuals in the UK who may have been expecting to meet a friend or family member in December but never did. Additionally, anyone in The Gambia or neighboring countries who might possess information about an individual making travel plans to the UK or Europe is urged to come forward.
He concluded, “Anyone who recognizes him is asked to contact us at Sussex Police online, quoting serial 101 of 07/12, or contact their relevant authority or Interpol.” The collaboration between international agencies and the public’s cooperation is crucial in unraveling the mystery surrounding this tragic incident and providing closure to those affected.
