Emergency services remain at the scene of a hazardous incident on the A259 Marina in St Leonards after suspected chemicals were discovered at a property near the junction with Caves Road.
Authorities were initially alerted following concerns about potentially dangerous substances at the address. A safety assessment was conducted, and as a precaution, a cordon and road closures have been implemented in the area. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes while emergency teams manage the situation.
Following an examination by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, it has been confirmed that the chemicals found inside the property are explosive and pose an immediate risk to life. As a result, police are now urging all residents within the defined cordon area to evacuate immediately for their own safety.
Officers are working closely with multiple agencies, including the local council, to manage the situation. A rest centre has been set up for affected residents who require temporary accommodation.
While this is considered an isolated incident with no broader threat to the wider community, emergency services are continuing their operations at the scene. Sussex Police have thanked the public for their patience and cooperation and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
Residents or motorists needing information are advised to follow official updates and avoid the affected area until the situation is fully resolved.
