Updated: Firefighters respond to late-night blaze in Brighton – man in critical condition

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to a fire in Down Terrace, Brighton, at 9.55pm on Monday 25 September 2023. The severity of the blaze necessitated the return of firefighters the following morning, with crews remaining on scene into the afternoon.

The response team comprised of four fire engines, with firefighters hailing from Hove, Preston Circus and Roedean. The Aerial Ladder Platform was also deployed, alongside support from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, in a concerted effort to combat the blaze.

As of 1.03pm, crews were still actively damping down ‘hot spots’ in the property.

Sussex Police are also present at the scene, conducting enquiries and investigations into the cause of the fire.

Sussex Police have confirmed a 56-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in a critical condition. they also say the fire was believed to be ignited deliberately and police are at this moment they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident

A spokesperson for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service urged anyone with information to come forward: “Anyone who saw what happened or witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area around these times is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 1532 of 25/09.”
