A Hailsham man who used his car as a weapon, killing a 24-year-old man and injuring another, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Kyle Dumble, 27, of no fixed address, was convicted at Hove Trial Centre on Friday, January 24, of murder, attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, and driving while disqualified and uninsured. He was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 17 years to be served.
The conviction followed an investigation into an incident that occurred on Saturday, November 18, 2023, on Western Road, Hailsham. Emergency services were called to the scene around 11 pm after reports that a man had been struck by a vehicle, which had fled before their arrival.
Jack Field, 24, from Hailsham, was found critically injured and tragically died from his injuries. Another man suffered severe bruising in the same attack.
The investigation revealed that Jack had been out with friends when a fight broke out with the occupants of a black Mitsubishi Shogun, driven by Dumble. Witnesses described seeing Dumble return to the vehicle, rev the engine, and deliberately mount the pavement to target Jack and his friends. He repeatedly drove forward and reversed over the group before fleeing.
Dumble turned himself in to the police 24 hours later and was charged with murder and related offences.
Victim’s Family Pays Tribute
Jack Field’s family described him as “a loving son, brother, and friend,” adding that he was “the most selfless, respectful gentleman who would do anything for anyone.” In a heartfelt tribute, they said, “He will never be able to be replaced and has left a gaping hole which will never be filled, but we will hold him in our hearts forever.”
They expressed relief at the justice served, saying, “Although nothing can bring Jack back, we are pleased he has got the justice he deserves.”
Detective Commends Strength of Family and Investigators
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell, who led the investigation, praised the family’s strength and the determination of the police and partners in bringing Dumble to justice.
“Nothing can make up for the loss of Jack for his family and loved ones,” DCI Campbell said. “With his killer behind bars, I hope they now have the opportunity to mourn this tragedy in their own ways.”
