If bikes could blush: Brighton naked bike ride returns

Brighton is gearing up for the return of the World Naked Bike Ride, making a comeback after a tumultuous year. Celebrating its 17th run this year, the annual event calls on all brave souls willing to bare it all on two wheels.

The ride is set to commence this Sunday, participants will gather from midday for a 2pm departure.

The World Naked Bike Ride demonstrations taking place in over 50 cities worldwide, promoting low-impact living, protest against climate change, and “challenging the reign of cars on our streets”. The unique event also is aimed at shining a light on cyclists’ vulnerability while reminding of there “strength and safety in numbers”.

Participants will festoon their bikes and bodies, celebrating “life and inclusivity” on a 7-mile journey around the city. The ride will culminate at the Naturist Beach at Black Rock with a splash and an informal gathering, weather permitting.

In previous years, Brighton’s ride has attracted up to a thousand exuberant participants, echoing the spirit of the event with their radiant smiles across there cheeks. The Brighton ride is part of a larger series of rides taking place throughout the UK and worldwide during June, including nearby Portsmouth, Folkstone, Cardiff, Manchester, and London, the latter taking place just a day before Brighton’s ride.

The World Naked Bike Ride encourages a convivial and inclusive atmosphere, cycling with sound systems and flags that highlight environmental and social issues addressed by cycling and body freedom.

Prospective participants are reminded to ensure that their bikes are roadworthy and to bring sunscreen and hydrating beverages. As temperatures are expected to reach a balmy 26°C, these items may prove crucial. The event has been marketed as child-friendly, with organisers saying: “Children are welcome and should be accompanied by an adult carer.”

When the main event concludes, an informal gathering will take place on the naturist beach from around 4:30pm.
