Jewish Memorial in Hove Defaced in Vile Hate Crime Attack

Outrage as 7/10 memorial honouring victims of Hamas attacks is desecrated in Brighton – police treating it as a hate crime and appealing for witnesses

Sussex Police launch investigation after faeces smeared on ‘Book of the Dead’ at Palmeira Square

A Jewish memorial in Palmeira Square, Hove, has been defaced in a deeply disturbing hate crime, prompting a police investigation and community outcry.

The incident took place on Sunday, 22 June, when faeces were smeared on a display at the 7/10 memorial known as the “Book of the Dead”, which honours victims of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.

Sussex Police confirmed they are treating the desecration as a hate crime and are appealing for any witnesses or information.

“Sussex Police received a report of criminal damage caused to a Jewish memorial in Palmeira Square, Hove,” a spokesperson said.
“The incident is being investigated and is being treated as a hate crime.”

The attack has sparked anger and heartbreak among members of the Jewish community, including Heidi Bachram, whose husband’s family were directly impacted by the 7/10 attacks.

“A DISGUSTING antisemite has put faeces on our book of the dead at the 7/10 memorial in Brighton,” she said. “It has broken my heart to see this desecration, especially as they put it next to Ofra Keidar’s face. Her body was just brought home today. I don’t have the words for how FURIOUS I am.”

Police said they are engaging with local communities to ensure safety and support amid rising tensions stemming from the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.

“We recognise there is the potential for increased tensions and are engaging with communities and partners to ensure people feel safe and protected.”

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or has any information is urged to contact Sussex Police online or via 101, quoting crime reference 1561 of 22/06.
