Lewes District Council Unveils Ambitious West Beach Plans

Promenade to Feature New Dining and Recreational Facilities

In a significant move towards revitalizing Newhaven, the planning committee at Lewes District Council has approved the ambitious redevelopment of the promenade above West Beach. This landmark project promises to transform the area into a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

The approved plans include a new 378m² restaurant, an outdoor gym, a children’s play area, and enhanced pedestrian links. These features are set to make West Beach a must-visit destination, boosting the local economy and enhancing the community’s quality of life.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of Lewes District Council, expressed her excitement about the project:

“This is a landmark development that will create an irresistible wow factor in Newhaven, attracting visitors from far and wide and providing a massive boost to the local economy.”

Nicholson also highlighted the broader context of this development within Newhaven’s ongoing renaissance:

“Alongside the transformation of Newhaven Square and development of a new health hub, the advanced work on the fish processing plant, our reinvention of The Marine Workshop, and countless other cultural, sporting, and social projects. We are seeing a burgeoning renaissance across Newhaven, and I couldn’t be prouder that Lewes District Council is leading the way.”

The redevelopment at West Beach will involve the demolition of existing structures and extensive landscaping. Plans also include footpath upgrades to ensure continuous pedestrian access between the town centre and the waterfront, as well as new toilets, including a Changing Places facility, and additional informal open spaces.
