London Gatwick Introduces CT Scanners – No More Plastic Bags or Device Removal

New CT scanners mean passengers no longer need to remove laptops or place liquids in plastic bags at security

ravellers passing through London Gatwick Airport can now breeze through security with greater ease, thanks to a multi-million-pound upgrade to cutting-edge security screening technology.

Passengers no longer need to remove electrical items such as laptops or tablets, nor are they required to place liquids in separate plastic bags. This is part of a major transformation programme to install 19 new computed tomography (CT) scanners across the airport’s security lanes.

The advanced scanners, developed by Smiths Detection as part of a wider UK Government initiative, use sophisticated 3D imaging to improve detection capabilities and streamline the security process.

Cyrus Dana, Head of Security at London Gatwick, said:
“More than 95% of passengers already pass through security in under five minutes. This positive change allows our passengers to move through the airport more smoothly while ensuring safety remains our top priority.”

The airport also emphasised that the upgrade supports its long-term vision of being “the airport for everyone – whatever your journey.” The new technology is not only efficient and secure but also more environmentally friendly, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bags.

Dana added: “As we continue to grow, our priority remains the safety of our passengers. These new scanners provide a safer, faster, and more sustainable travel experience. As we prepare for a busy summer season, we’re proud to offer this improved service to our passengers.”

The rollout is now fully complete, just in time for peak holiday travel, setting a new benchmark for UK airport security.
