Man Charged with Rape of Teenage Girl in Newhaven

Bishopstone Man Faces Rape Charges After Assault on Minor in Newhaven

A 29-year-old man has been charged with the rape and sexual assault of a teenage girl in Newhaven, Sussex Police have confirmed. The incident occurred in Denton Woods on the morning of Friday, 3 May, following an exchange of messages between the victim and the suspect on social media.

The report of the assault was received by police on Saturday, 4 May, and the victim, who is under the age of 16, has been receiving support from specialist officers since the incident was reported.

Oliver James, of Marine Drive, Bishopstone, was quickly identified as the prime suspect. He was arrested on Saturday evening and subsequently charged with rape and sexual assault. James is currently remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 3 June.

Detective Sergeant Nick Green said: “The young victim in this investigation has shown exceptional bravery to come forward and report this distressing incident.

“She will continue to receive the full support of specialist officers while the investigation continues.

“We are asking anyone who has any information that could help to contact Sussex Police online or via 101, quoting Operation Atworth.”
