Newhaven and Birling Gap Teams Save Walker on Christmas Eve

On the evening of December 24th, 2023, a rescue operation unfolded at the Seven Sisters Country Park when a lone walker became trapped in rising floodwaters amidst thick mist and darkness.

The Newhaven Coastguard Team, along with their counterparts from Birling Gap, were mobilised to conduct a search and rescue mission in the challenging conditions.

The walker, who had lost their way along the Cuckmere River, found themselves in a perilous situation as the waters rapidly rose.

Utilising the innovative what3words app, the rescue teams were able to pinpoint the exact location of the stranded individual. Thanks to the quick response and coordinated efforts of the coastguard teams, the walker was successfully rescued from the treacherous situation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by coastal areas, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Authorities remind the public to always prioritise safety and in cases of coastal emergencies, to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
