Passenger Train Stranded After Striking Level Crossing Debris

Southern Rail UK passengers face delays; incident under investigation.

Passengers on a Southern Rail UK service experienced significant delays this morning following an incident at Adversane, where a train collided with debris from a damaged level crossing barrier. The disruption occurred just after 8:15 AM between Billingshurst and Pulborough, leading to a challenging morning commute.

The driver of the train reported hitting the debris shortly after a car reportedly struck the barrier at the level crossing, scattering fragments onto the track. According to Network Rail, some of the debris impacted the train’s electrical pick-up equipment, causing the train to lose power and become immobilized. This incident resulted in damage not only to the train but also to the track infrastructure.

Efforts to manage the situation included transferring all passengers to an adjacent train, allowing them to continue their journeys with minimal further disruption. Network Rail is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and to implement measures to prevent future occurrences.

Southern Rail UK has issued an apology to affected customers and encourages anyone who was delayed by the incident to get in touch regarding compensation.
