A Polegate man has been jailed for more than two and a half years after a violent domestic assault on his partner in Eastbourne.
Oliver McDonald, 53, of Brookside Avenue, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on 25 June where he was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison. He was also given a 10-year restraining order and ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge.
The court heard that on 3 September last year, McDonald’s 64-year-old partner told him she wished to end their relationship due to his aggressive behaviour over a six-month period. The following day, while collecting her belongings from their shared residence, she was violently attacked.
As the victim attempted to leave, McDonald confronted her, demanding to know why she had packed her bags. He then launched a brutal assault, strangling her, punching and kicking her repeatedly, and snatching her phone to prevent her from calling for help.
Despite her injuries, the woman managed to escape and drive herself to a local police station to report the incident. McDonald followed her there and was promptly arrested.
He was initially charged with theft, assault by beating, and two counts of non-fatal strangulation. Although McDonald first pleaded not guilty, he later changed his plea to guilty on all charges.
PC Daniel Turk, who led the investigation, praised the victim and her daughter for their bravery and cooperation:
“The physical, emotional, and financial impact on the victim has been huge and her bravery throughout the investigation has been remarkable.
“This sentencing reflects the severity of the offender’s actions and serves as a reminder that domestic abuse will not be tolerated. I hope this result can bring some peace and closure to her and her family.”
