Saved by the Community: Saltdean Lido Comes Off Historic England’s At Risk List

In an inspiring turn of events, Saltdean Lido has been officially removed from Historic England’s Heritage At Risk register, a monumental milestone celebrated by the community and preservationists alike. After over 14 years of campaigning, fundraising, and extensive restoration, the iconic Art Deco structure has been restored to its former glory, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.

The historic Saltdean Lido, a unique coastal landmark, was on the brink of being lost forever over a decade ago. Facing years of decay and severe damage from its exposed sea-facing location, the building’s reinforced concrete was deteriorating rapidly, leaving the structure at risk of collapse. At the time, there was even a looming threat of residential redevelopment, which galvanized the community to take immediate action to save the cherished site.

In 2009, Saltdean Lido was added to Historic England’s At Risk Register, gaining Grade II* listing thanks to its architectural and historical significance. This designation not only brought national attention to the Lido but also played a pivotal role in securing funding and support for restoration efforts. By 2022, the restoration project was fully underway, made possible through financial assistance from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous funders.

Derek Leaver, Chair of Saltdean Lido, shared his gratitude, saying, “Bringing new life to Saltdean Lido has been a fantastic achievement for the community-led project. We are immensely grateful for the financial support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and numerous other funders, as well as the pragmatic and helpful advice from Historic England.”

Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers, supporters, and community members who refused to give up on Saltdean Lido, the site has been transformed into a vibrant destination. Now off the Heritage At Risk register, Saltdean Lido once again serves as a hub for entertainment, community gatherings, and leisure, cementing its place in local history and on the map for visitors.

To celebrate this achievement, Saltdean Lido has shared before-and-after photos highlighting just how close the building came to being lost—a powerful reminder of the importance of community spirit and preservation.
