“Spare a Pound, Save a Sound” Regency Radio’s Crowdfunding Hits a High Note

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown, a new beacon of local radio, Regency Radio, has emerged, established by a group of experienced volunteers from the radio industry. This initiative comes in response to the declining presence of local content in radio broadcasting, as smaller stations have been increasingly bought out by global media empires.

Focusing on community needs, Regency Radio was launched with an investment of £50,000 from its founders. The station, run entirely by volunteers, faces monthly operational costs of around £2,000, which includes rent, utilities, and various licensing and insurance fees. The station’s financial challenges are compounded by the difficulty in securing advertising revenue, a market largely dominated by major media corporations.

The founders have turned to crowdfunding as a means to support the station’s ongoing costs and to ensure its growth and sustainability. With a strong commitment to local content, Regency Radio is home to a variety of shows and a roster of presenters ranging from industry veterans like Mike Read, David Legge, and Tommy Boyd, to new, local talent. The station’s programming includes regular segments like breakfast, daytime, and drivetime shows, as well as specialized evening content such as motoring shows, dance music, and the Heritage Chart.

One of the station’s unique features is its approach to advertising; instead of traditional commercials, the station has opted for show sponsors, allowing for more uninterrupted music and content. This approach, along with a wide-ranging playlist, ensures a diverse listening experience.

With over 50,000 listeners tuning in weekly, Regency Radio broadcasts on DAB+ in the Brighton and Hove area, on Freeview channel 277 in the south, and is also accessible through their app, online, and on smart speakers.

To further enhance its community presence, Regency Radio has outlined plans including the launch of training programs at its studios, the development of more local-specific shows, the expansion of its transmission reach, and improved local news and events coverage.

The station’s appeal for public support, even if it’s a modest contribution of £1, highlights its dedication to serving the local community and preserving the essence of local radio..
