Two Arrests Made in Sussex Police Malaga 2019 Murder Investigation

Sussex Police detectives investigating the disappearance and suspected murders of Daniel (Danny) Poole, 46, and his son Liam Poole, 22, have made two arrests.

Danny and Liam, from Burgess Hill, vanished in 2019 after traveling to Malaga, Spain. Their disappearance was reclassified as a murder investigation in 2022 due to suspicious circumstances.

This week, a man in his 30s from West Sussex and another man in his 40s from Merseyside were arrested on suspicion of their murders. Both men have been questioned and released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Detectives Appeal for Information

Sussex Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The force has offered a £10,000 reward for details leading to the arrest and charge of those responsible.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Dunn said:
“Although Danny and Liam went missing in Spain, we believe there are people in the UK who may hold vital information about their disappearance.

“We understand there may be some who have felt unable to come forward before now, but it’s not too late to do the right thing. Whether it’s something you know, or something you may have subsequently heard, we urge you to get in touch and share it with us. We will listen and we will investigate any viable new lines of enquiry.

“You may not appreciate the importance of the information you have, but it could be the piece of the puzzle we need to build the picture of what happened to Danny and Liam. Even the smallest detail could be significant in helping us provide their families with the answers they so desperately need and deserve.”

Timeline of Events

Danny and Liam arrived in Malaga on March 31, 2019, hiring a grey Peugeot 308 (registration 0254 KTM) that was later found abandoned by Spanish police. Their luggage and passports were left in their hotel, suggesting their disappearance was not planned.

Initially led by Spanish authorities, the case was closely monitored by Sussex Police. In 2022, the Surrey and Sussex Police Major Crime Team reclassified the case as a murder investigation and recently took over primacy from Spanish police.

Family’s Plea for Information

The families of Danny and Liam have been updated on the investigation’s progress and are echoing Sussex Police’s plea for anyone with information to come forward.

How to Provide Information

  • Submit information online via the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP).
  • Call 101, quoting Operation Pheasant.
  • Contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Even the smallest detail could help bring closure to Danny and Liam’s loved ones and bring those responsible to justice.
