Dr Rosemary Coogan, a astronomy doctoral graduate of the University of Sussex has been chosen to be an astronaut with The European Space Agency. Coogan is to be one of five new scientists selected by the agency to be Europe’s next “career astronauts”.
Rosemary holds several awards for her telescope observation time at international observatories ALMA (Chile) and NOEMA (France) and for her PhD thesis from the University of Sussex Astronomy Centre.
Her doctoral research at the University of Sussex was focused on studying galaxy evolution and the activity of active galactic nuclei.
Rosemary Coogan is one of the more than 22 500 candidates who submitted a valid application in 2021 in response to ESA’s call for new astronauts for missions to the International Space Station and beyond.
