VIDEO: Engine Trouble at Sea: Newhaven RNLI Tow Motorboat to Safety During Training Shout

First Rescue Shout for Newhaven RNLI Volunteer During Training Callout

Newhaven RNLI’s volunteer crew sprang into action on Tuesday morning after being diverted from a routine training exercise to assist a motorboat experiencing engine failure just outside Newhaven Harbour.

At 10:45am, HM Coastguard tasked the crew of the D class inshore lifeboat D-890 Bill Hall to respond to the stricken vessel, located approximately 200 metres southwest of the breakwater at the harbour entrance.

The motorboat, with two people on board—both wearing lifejackets—was drifting dangerously close to navigational routes. Assessing the situation, the helm made the decision to tow the vessel into the safety of the harbour to avoid obstruction and ensure the safety of both the casualty craft and other marine traffic.

Dan Wittenberg, helm of the lifeboat, said:

“We transferred a crew member onto the casualty boat to assist with tow line setup and conduct welfare checks. We then initiated an astern tow until the casualty was safely inside the shelter of the harbour.”

The vessel was secured alongside a pontoon where Coastguard Rescue Team members were on hand to assist. Once moored, the two people on board were handed over to the CRT and found to be in good health.

The shout marked a significant milestone for Rickie Botwright, a new volunteer crew member on his very first rescue operation since beginning training in December 2024.

Rickie said:

“It was inspiring to watch the crew manage the entire operation so professionally and compassionately. Being part of my first shout filled me with pride, and I’m looking forward to becoming an even stronger asset to the lifeboat family and community.”

The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station at midday, where it was refuelled and cleaned in preparation for future emergencies.

Call for Volunteers

Newhaven RNLI is currently seeking new recruits to join their dedicated volunteer team. Opportunities are open in their lifeboat station, shop, fundraising team, and for the position of Admin Officer.
