The incident unfolded shortly after 6:30 pm on March 5, when authorities were alerted to the presence of a man on campus reportedly making grave threats. Responding rapidly to the call, armed officers arrived at the scene, arresting the young man on charges of making threats to kill and engaging in malicious communications.

Despite the severe nature of the accusations, an exhaustive search of a related address did not uncover any firearms. Nevertheless, as a safety measure, police evacuated several flats.

A spokesperson from the University of Sussex emphasised the gravity of the situation, stating, “There was an incident yesterday evening, and police were called to the campus. This is now a matter for the police, and it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage.”

Detective Sergeant Joshua Bellamy said: “Officers quickly responded to this incident and ensured the safety of students and the public immediately.

“The man was not found in possession of any firearms and enquiries are now ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“We would like to thank students and the public for their patience and co-operation while this incident was ongoing.”
