Video: Storm Isha Set to Slam Kent and Sussex

In a weather update, National Highways has issued an amber severe weather alert, warning of substantial disruptions due to gales in the South East region, particularly impacting Kent and Sussex. The alert comes into effect from 9pm on Sunday, January 21, and is expected to last until around 3am on Monday, January 22.

The region is bracing for a turbulent night as gusts from Storm Isha are anticipated to frequently reach speeds of 50-60 mph, with the possibility of surges up to 70 mph. Exposed coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, with predictions of wind speeds reaching as high as 80 mph at times. These conditions pose a significant risk of damage and disruption.

By mid-morning on Monday, the winds are expected to shift to a westerly direction and gradually ease. However, the Met Office warns of a ‘good chance’ of power cuts and potential damage to buildings, including the risk of tiles being blown off roofs.

The severe weather is set to impact various modes of transport, with drivers and public transport users warned to expect longer journey times and possible cancellations. Road, rail, air, and ferry services may all be affected by the stormy conditions.

High-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorbikes are identified as particularly ‘vulnerable’ in these conditions, with a high risk of being blown over. Authorities are urging drivers of such vehicles to exercise extreme caution or avoid travel if possible.
