Sussex Police have launched an investigation into racially-aggravated public order offences following a protest at the Clock Tower in Brighton on Saturday, 7 June.
The incident relates to offensive language used during the demonstration, which has been widely shared online. Video footage from the scene – included below – sparked complaints and led to a formal review.
Chief Superintendent Rachel Carr, divisional commander for Brighton and Hove, said:
“We recognise the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza is deeply affecting communities both locally and globally.
We are committed to investigating any reported offences proportionately and without prejudice, while being sensitive to the complexities involved.”
She confirmed that an officer’s language at the protest had caused “deep offence,” particularly within the Jewish community.
“We wholeheartedly apologise. The comment was unintentional and does not reflect Sussex Police’s position.”
The force confirmed a policing operation was in place to allow peaceful protest while ensuring safety and reducing disruption.
An investigation is now underway, and Sussex Police are appealing for anyone with further information or video evidence to come forward.
Information can be reported online or via 101, quoting Operation Smallmead.
