Volk’s Electric Railway Named Railway of the Year

Volk’s Electric Railway Triumphs at National Heritage Railway Awards

Brighton & Hove’s Volk’s Electric Railway, the world’s oldest operating electric railway and a beacon of sustainable transportation, has been named ‘Railway of the Year’ at the Heritage Railway Association’s annual awards. Competing against over 200 heritage railways in the UK, Volk’s Electric Railway stood out to clinch this prestigious national accolade, highlighting its unique importance to Brighton & Hove’s heritage and its popularity among both residents and visitors.

Councillor Alan Robins, Chair of the Culture, Heritage, Sport, Tourism & Economic Development Committee, praised the railway as a key part of the city’s heritage and lauded the award as a testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers dedicated to the railway’s operation. This recognition comes on the heels of the railway’s 140th Anniversary celebrations last August, marking a year of significant achievements for this historic attraction.

James Barton, Manager of Volk’s Electric Railway, expressed his delight at the win, emphasizing the honour it represents and extending thanks to the dedicated staff, volunteers, and supportive visitors who contribute to the railway’s legacy. The award not only celebrates the railway’s commitment to eco-friendly and efficient transport but also underscores its role in preserving Brighton’s cultural heritage.

The ceremony, held in Brighton, added a special touch to the railway’s victory, bringing the celebration closer to home for those who cherish and support the railway. As the Volk’s Electric Railway gears up to welcome visitors again this Easter season, starting Friday, 29 March (Good Friday), it continues to serve as a testament to the enduring charm and historical significance of heritage railways in promoting sustainable transportation and cultural preservation.
