On Sunday, 12th May, at 12:14, Newhaven RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crew were called into action to rescue two individuals who had been cut off by the tide east of Seaford Beach.
Responding swiftly, the RNLI launched the Severn Class 17-45 lifeboat, ‘The Duke of Kent,’ following reports from a nearby fishing vessel that two people were stranded between Splash Point and Hope Gap.
Upon arrival at the scene, the Severn’s smaller Y Boat was deployed to navigate the rocky waters and safely recover the stranded individuals from the shore. After being brought aboard the Severn, the rescued individuals were checked over by the crew and then transported to the safety of Seaford Beach.
This incident highlights the importance of tide awareness for coastal safety. In 2020, the RNLI conducted 351 rescues related to tidal cut-offs. To ensure safety while enjoying the coast, always inform someone of your plans, carry a means of calling for help, and check the tide times. Remaining aware of your surroundings and the tide’s movements is crucial.
Sam Smith, a volunteer crew member, emphasised, “Tide times and heights vary throughout the month and can easily leave people stranded and in need of help. Always check the tide times before heading to the coast. If you find yourself, or see anyone else, in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
