Beloved BBC Radio Sussex Presenter David Arscott Dies Aged 81

Tributes pour in for the broadcaster who touched lives through his work and kindness.

David Arscott, a renowned broadcaster and author, has passed away aged 81. He died peacefully on a bench in the grounds of Lewes Priory on November 29, shortly after enjoying a game of tennis.

Best known for hosting and producing BBC Radio Brighton, later rebranded as Radio Sussex, from the 1970s to 1991, David was a familiar and much-loved voice to many listeners across the South of England.

David is survived by his wife, Jill, seven children – three of whom he shared with Jill – and ten grandchildren. Paying tribute to her husband, Jill reflected:
“He liked people and rarely judged them. Although he loved his writing, he always said that radio presenting was the best job he had ever had.”

A Lifelong Dedication to Broadcasting and Writing

David began his career as a newspaper journalist, laying the groundwork for his eventual transition into broadcasting. His tenure at BBC Radio Brighton cemented his place in the hearts of his listeners, while his creative pursuits expanded far beyond the airwaves. Over the course of his life, David authored more than 40 books, earning a reputation as a gifted storyteller and chronicler of local history.

A Local Hero

David’s contributions extended beyond his professional life. He was deeply involved in his local community and was instrumental in the creation of a public garden in the town centre, a project that exemplified his dedication to fostering connections and beauty within his surroundings.

In a poignant act of care for his beloved garden, David gave its meadow one final cut in late autumn and planted a rambling rector rose under a goat willow – a lasting gift that will bloom in the years to come.

A Resting Place Close to Home

David’s final resting place is in Westmeston, nestled between the rolling South Downs and the cottage he once called home with Jill and their children. It is a fitting farewell to a man who cherished his family, his community, and the landscape that inspired so much of his work.

As tributes pour in from friends, family, and former colleagues, David will be remembered not only for his voice that brought comfort and joy to many but also for his kindness, humility, and unwavering dedication to the people and places he held dear.
