In a sad post on social media, Friday night The Bulldog an iconic Brighton LGBTQ+ venue announced it would be closing down after servicing customers since 1979. This closure will certenly be felt in the famously queer nightlife scene of St James Street.
Online the team explained, that both the pandemic and the current economic climate experienced the last in the last four years have left them with no other choice but to close their doors.

The current owners took over the venue in 2018, refurbishing and then reopening it. During this time they have continued to raise money for the fantastic local charity The Rainbow Fund – Brighton & Hove.
They finished up their goodbye post saying: “We, as a team will stand proud in what we have built, in turning around the business, and making an legendary LGBTQ+ safe space. This isn’t the end of our story just the beginning of another chapter…”
“But for now this is the All New Bulldog Brighton, the Heart of Gay Brighton saying good night, stay safe and get ready for what’s coming next.”
Patrons in the comments section expressed their sadness: “Oh nooooo, one of my favourite places! You folks are amazing xxx”
“Sad to see you close after all your work and support for the scene and Brighton Rainbow Fund. I’m sure it’s not the last we have seen of you both. Good luck and take care.”
We at Sussex News wish the team, the best of luck for the future.
