Selsey Coastguard Responds to Incidents
Selsey, 11/07/23 – In a busy day for the Selsey Coastguard Team, they were called into action for two separate incidents along the coast.
At 06:21, the team received reports of a RHIB that had washed up on Selsey beach. Responding swiftly, they collected detailed information about the vessel and relayed it to their Operations Centre. The diligent investigators managed to track down and establish contact with the owner. To ensure the RHIB’s safety, it was securely anchored to the breakwater, awaiting the owner’s arrival for recovery. With the situation under control, the team stood down and returned to the station, ready for any future emergencies.
Later, at 16:10, a distress call reached the Selsey Coastguard team, reporting a person cut off by the tide at the entrance to Pagham Harbour. Working in coordination with the Selsey Inshore Lifeboat and the Littlehampton Coastguard Team, a search was immediately initiated. Despite scouring the area, the Lifeboat crew did not spot anyone in the water. However, a vigilant member of the Selsey Coastguard Team stationed at Church Norton noticed a lone figure walking along the opposite bank. Recognizing the potential danger, they promptly requested the Inshore Lifeboat to approach and assist the individual.
The ensuing encounter confirmed their suspicions—the person they encountered was indeed the casualty they had been searching for. It was revealed that he had found himself in a precarious situation while fishing, unaware of the rapidly encroaching tide that surrounded him. Miraculously, he managed to navigate his way back to shore, unharmed and safe.
