London Gatwick’s North Terminal is set for a remarkable transformation as it undergoes its largest renovation project to date. With an investment of over £10 million, passengers can look forward to an array of exciting new features and an enhanced airport experience. The project, slated for completion in early 2024, aims to provide a personalized and relaxing environment that aligns with London Gatwick’s status as a major international airport.
The departure lounge will receive a modern makeover, featuring contemporary seating and new flooring. Every seat will be equipped with accessible power points strategically placed in distinct “mood zones,” allowing passengers to customize their pre-flight experience, whether they prefer to relax, work, or shop. To create a connection with the beautiful West Sussex countryside, a sustainable planting scheme will be implemented, bringing the outdoors inside. Additionally, local artwork will be prominently displayed, showcasing Gatwick’s ties to the surrounding region.
Improvements in sightlines and wayfinding will make navigating the departure lounge a breeze. Passengers will be guided by a new orientation zone, featuring unique digital artwork and content, ensuring they can easily explore and enjoy everything the lounge has to offer. This project marks the first major overhaul of the departure lounge since its inauguration in 1988 and is part of a comprehensive multi-million-pound development program, including investments in the train station, overall airport modernization and expansion, and the recently launched new branding and vision.

Rachel Bulford, Retail Director at London Gatwick, emphasised the alignment of the North Terminal redevelopment with the airport’s refreshed brand and vision. She expressed excitement about the enhanced features and layout, which will make the space more navigable and enjoyable for passengers. The inclusion of varied seating areas, charging points, and a pleasant environment will provide passengers with the freedom to spend their time as they wish, whether it’s relaxing, shopping, dining, or attending to last-minute emails. Gatwick aims to create a unique sense of place that acknowledges its location as a London airport while celebrating the vibrant offerings of the South East region.
Adding to the excitement, several new retailers and restaurants, such as The Breakfast Club and BrewDog, will be opening their doors this year, introducing renowned London and British brands to Gatwick’s North Terminal. One recent addition is curi.o.city, a novel concept store from WHSmith, offering gifts and souvenirs from a diverse range of regional, London-based, and global brands, including Cambridge Gin, Biscuiteers, Kew Gardens, ZSL London Zoo, and Harry Potter.
Looking ahead, London Gatwick is investing in its long-term future by preparing a planning application to bring the airport’s Northern Runway into regular use for departures, alongside its main runway. This development aims to improve airport resilience, reduce delays, and provide a significant boost to the national and regional economy by supporting trade, tourism, and creating new job opportunities. The forward-thinking plans demonstrate Gatwick’s commitment to innovation and maintaining its status as a leading international airport.
