olice have arrested a 26-year-old man from Crawley on suspicion of murder following a tragic incident early this morning in the town center. Officers were called to Station Way at approximately 7.10am after receiving reports of an altercation between a man and a woman.
Upon arrival, officers conducted a search of the area and discovered a woman in a nearby car park with serious stab injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
In response to the incident, a wider search was launched to locate the suspect. Police quickly apprehended a man in Stephenson Road, who was arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently in police custody.
Superintendent Rachel Swinney, speaking about the incident, said: “This is a tragic incident that has seen a young woman lose her life, and we are working hard to understand exactly what has happened. Officers were able to swiftly bring a suspect into custody and we are not currently searching for anyone else.”
Superintendent Swinney also noted that there will be an increased police presence in the area as investigations continue. She urged any members of the public with concerns to speak with officers on the scene. Additionally, anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact the police online or via 101, quoting Operation Venn.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, and investigations are ongoing as the community comes to terms with this shocking event.
