In a harrowing incident that shook the community of Hailsham, a man has been sentenced for his role in a robbery targeting an elderly resident in his home. Joshua McKenzie, 41, hailing from Orchard Grove, Penge, was part of a group of four individuals who forcibly entered a property on Ersham Road.
The victim, a man in his 80s, endured a terrifying ordeal as he was threatened for money and subjected to physical assault during the intrusion. Cash was unlawfully taken from the premises, leaving the elderly resident traumatized by the brazen attack.
McKenzie’s culpability was established through forensic evidence, as his DNA was discovered at the scene of the crime. Following a trial at Lewes Crown Court, McKenzie was found guilty of robbery, facing the consequences of his actions.
On April 10, the court handed down a sentence of nine years’ imprisonment, reflecting the severity of the offence and the impact on the victim’s life. Details emerged during proceedings, shedding light on the chilling events of October 7 last year when the victim was confronted by four masked intruders in the dead of night.
Despite attempts to deflect responsibility during police interrogation, McKenzie’s DNA presence at the scene provided irrefutable evidence of his involvement. Further scrutiny of McKenzie’s residence uncovered a trove of incriminating items, including bank notes, weapons such as knives and a baseball bat, as well as face masks and balaclavas, further cementing his connection to the crime.
Investigator Laura Rolph said: “This was distressing incident for the victim who was threatened in his own home. “McKenzie tried to concoct a story about being assaulted, but we found evidence connecting him to the robbery when we arrested him.
“He refused to provide any answers to officers about the accomplices.
“The case shows our determination to catch dangerous offenders. We are pleased that McKenzie was found guilty and has been taken off the streets.
