National Coastwatch Shoreham alerts lifeboat to Kayaker in distress

On Saturday morning, the Shoreham inshore lifeboat was lauched in response to a distress call from a kayaker, located half a mile south of the Shoreham Harbour entrance.

This alert was initially raised by the vigilant National Coastwatch Shoreham tower.

The crew located the kayaker in question, desperately holding onto an overturned kayak, drifting in an easterly direction. Having fallen into the water, he was unable to re-enter his kayak.

The crew conducted a successful rescue operation, hoisting both the kayaker and his equipment aboard the lifeboat. They were then safely transported back to the lifeboat station.

Dom Huxley, the lifeboat helm, reported, “Despite spending approximately 20 minutes in the water, the casualty was in good condition thanks to his wetsuit and buoyancy aid. Additionally, he was equipped with a mobile phone and personal locator beacon.”

In the event of witnessing someone in distress in the water, please dial 999 and request assistance from the coastguard.
